SHAPE SORTER
FT. FABIO ALMEIDA. DOMINIC BEATTIE. IAN DAWSON. TIM ELLIS. JO HUMMEL. FRANK KENT. ANNA LIBER LEWIS. IMOGEN WETHERELL. ANISA ZAHEDI.
A shape sorter is a pedagogical toy for children consisting of wooden geometric forms such as cubes,
spheres, and cylinders. Children are encouraged to assemble them in various configurations and
structures, thus fostering an intuitive understanding of geometry, symmetry, and balance. ‘Shape Sorter’
is a group show of nine mid-career London based artists: Fabio Almeida, Dominic Beattie, Ian Dawson,
Tim Ellis, Jo Hummel, Frank Kent, Anna Liber Lewis, Imogen Wetherell, and Anisa Zahedi.
The exhibition centres around instinctual experimentation in the act of creation. Via process akin to play,
the puzzle of composing various materials into coherent, yet non representational objects is attempted.
The array of unique artefacts in the exhibition demonstrate the artists’ engagement and interest in both
traditional and contemporary crafts. Working within often automatic process driven repetition systems,
they explore the nature of spontaneity, the deliberate element of chance and subjective experience.
