NATURE
Yamou
We are pleased to welcome MRS ART in our gallery for her solo exhibition of Abderrahim Yamou — known simply as Yamou (b. 1959, Casablanca) — who creates powerful visual worlds that explore the deep connection between nature and form. With a background in biology and sociology before studying contemporary art at the Sorbonne in Paris, Yamou brings a uniquely scientific and poetic sensitivity to his work.
Since the 1990s, his paintings have evolved into vibrant spaces where plants, cells, and organic structures come alive. His use of natural materials—earth, sand, pigment—reveals a tactile, almost archaeological process. The result is a visual language that’s both microscopic and monumental, blurring the lines between figuration and abstraction. In addition to his paintings, Yamou creates sculptural works inspired by traditional African forms, using metal, tools, nails, and living plants to speak to resilience, ritual, and the fragility of life.
With over 30 solo and group exhibitions internationally, Yamou’s work is included in over 20 major collections worldwide, such as: the ONA Foundation (Morocco), the World Bank (USA), the Neuberger Museum of Art (USA), Written Art Foundation (Germany), Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres (France), Nelson Mandela Foundation (South Africa), and more.
MRS ART, founded in 2022 by French Moroccan art entrepreneur Malika Riadi Schulz, is a London-based platform dedicated to showcasing contemporary artists from West and North Africa. With a mission to bridge African artistic talent and the global art world, MRS ART represents over ten artists whose works feature in major collections such as the Guggenheim, the Smithsonian, and the Institut du Monde Arabe. Its roster includes renowned names like Mahi Binebine, Amina Benbouchta, Amouzou, Eric Bourret, and Majida Khattari, several of whom have exhibited at the Venice Biennale.
This exhibition is part of a broader programme of MRS ART, with environmentalist Eric Bourret presenting new photographic works in September, followed by a group show during Frieze London.
