Maria Wallenstål-Schoenberg
Born in Uppsala, Sweden 1959, Maria lives and works in Munich.
Maria Wallenstål-Schoenberg draws on the basic aspects of Concrete Art, which can be seen above all in her absolute prioritisation of colour as a means of expression. Nevertheless, she frees her working method from
the strict rules and uncompromising adherence to theory to which some representatives of this movement bave dedicated themselves. She softens the forms and allows for sensuality, dispensing with strict geometry and surface perfection. She does this by allowing certain irregularities, which are unavoidable as she applies the carefully mixed colours with a palette knife and allows a tactile dimension to flow into her works through impasto application.
In a continuous and exploratory repetition, Maria Wallenstål-Schoenberg creates colour spaces that support and reinforce each other to create a harmonious sound. This design idea draws on the principle of complementarity in colour theory and at the same time functions metaphorically for the essential relationship between the viewer and the picture. In this case, this painting is a composition of colour fields on one plane. Two reflecting portals in different shades of light and dark orange are created by the incidence of light and the surface structure left behind by the painting tool.
This results in a variety on the seemingly homogeneous surface. Beneath the light colour fields are further layers of other colours that are only visible at the edges of the form and the picture. Traces of blue, green and orange... These layers serve to reinforce the presence of the orange colour areas and make them more vivid and profound. A highly reduced mixture of these colours, typical of Maria Wallenstal-Schoenberg's colour palette, surrounds the two orange forms as well as a third element on the right-hand side of the painting, which looks like a mixture of circle and rectangle and is painted beyond the edge of the painting. The way in which Maria Wallenstål-Schoenberg works with the colours and the limits of the canvas and the tension between the desire to expand and the awareness of these limits of our perception enables us to look beyond the purely visible.
